Claudia Pineda, Ecuador

Claudia Pineda is a footballer from Venezuela, currently playing for Independiente de Valle, a professional football club in Ecuador. UNHCR and Independiente del Valle work together to promote the inclusion of refugees in Ecuador through sport. Through an agreement signed at the end of 2020, UNHCR and IDV conduct joint awareness-raising activities to show how football can help people forced to flee find a new home in Ecuador.

Can you introduce yourself and tell us about your football life?

Puede presentarse y hablarnos un poco de su vida futbolística?

My name is Claudia Pineda, a player for Team Dragonas of Independiente del Valle in Ecuador. I am 27 years old and I come from Barquisimeto, Venezuela. I started playing football when I was 15 in a club from my hometown Maximo Viloria. I entered semi-professional football in Venezuela with Deportivo Lara and returned to amateur football when I left my country to play for Dragonas USFQ, years before the team partnered with Independiente del Valle.

I left my country hoping I could become an international football player. The situation in my country was getting difficult. Since then, I have witnessed how female football has professionalized in Ecuador.

Mi nombre es Claudia Pineda, jugadora de Dragonas Independiente del Valle (Ecuador), tengo 27 años y soy de Barquisimeto-Venezuela. Comencé a jugar a los 15 años en un club perteneciente a mi ciudad natal llamado Máximo Viloria, posteriormente estrené la semi-profesionalización del fútbol venezolano con el Deportivo Lara e incursioné nuevamente en el fútbol amateur cuando tomé la decisión de salir de mi país con rumbo a las Dragonas USFQ, años antes de que este club realizase su alianza con el Independiente del Valle.

Decidí salir de mi país con la intención de internacionalizarme deportivamente motivada por la crisis que se vive en mi país natal. En este periodo he presenciado la profesionalización del fútbol femenino en Ecuador.

What did you try to show with the photos? Was there some wider meaning?

Qué intentaste mostrar con las fotos? Hubo algún significado más amplio?

The pictures are mostly taken in the premises of Independiente del Valle’s high-performance complex as well as at the Banco Guayaquil Stadium (the club’s stadium). The photos feature my team members and locations where we practice and play, our second home. One or two of the photos are also of my dog Oka who, together with my family, drives me to keep moving forwards in life.

Each photo seeks to depict what we were going through in that moment, for example a tactical discussion we had at the locker room during the Superliga finals.

My favourite photo is the one in the locker room where it reads “give an extra step after you no longer can”. For me it means to persevere, the virtue that represents my entire career. In addition, we now have a locker room, a place of our own, which was a distant dream we have now made come true.

There was also a women's soccer match between the land where I was born (Venezuela) and the one that has seen me mature (Ecuador).

Las fotos en su mayoría fueron tomadas en las instalaciones del Complejo de Alto Rendimiento del Independiente del Valle, así como en el Estadio Banco Guayaquil (el estadio del club). Las principales protagonistas de las fotografías son mis compañeras y los escenarios deportivos en donde nos desenvolvemos día a día los cuales son considerados nuestra casa. También en alguna foto se cuela mi perrita (Oka) quién es junto con mi familia mi motor para seguir adelante.

Cada foto iba acompañada de un momento, con las cuales quisiera transmitir lo que vivíamos en ese entonces, como por ejemplo la charla táctica en el camerino del estadio en instancias finales de la Superliga.

La foto del camerino en donde se refleja la frase de “DAR UN PASO MÁS DEL QUE YA NO SE PUEDE”. Para mí significa “PERSEVERAR” y es casualmente el valor que considero más representativo a lo largo de mi carrera. Además, el que hoy contemos con nuestro camerino, un espacio propio, era un sueño lejano que hoy se ha vuelto realidad.

También hubo un partido de fútbol femenino entre la tierra que me vio nacer (Venezuela) y la que me ha visto madurar (Ecuador).

Can you tell us the personal story of someone in the photos?

Puedes contarnos la historia personal de alguien más en las fotos?

Evelyn and Yuriana. Evelyn is Ecuadorian and is 14 years old. She plays centre midfield and is currently training and learning - she represents the youth. Yuriana is from Venezuela and is 27 years old. She is an experienced striker. They are two people who complement me as part of a team in football and in life. Evelyn reminds me of what it means to be young, and Yuriana makes me feel closer to home. They both remind me of the importance of scoring goals in the key moments of life.

Evelyn y Yuriana. Evelyn es de Ecuador y tiene 14 años, juega en la posición de medio centro, está en proceso de formación y representa la juventud. Yuriana es de Venezuela, tiene 27 años, es una atacante consolidada y representa la experiencia.  Son dos personas que me complementan, son parte de mi equipo, tanto en el fútbol como en la vida. La primera me mantiene soñando con la ilusión de una niña y la segunda además de hacerme sentir más cerca de mi país, me recuerda la importancia de marcar goles en los momentos decisivos de tu vida.

Did you play soccer before leaving your country and arriving in Ecuador? Who were you playing with?

Jugabas al fútbol antes de salir de tu país y llegar a Ecuador? Con quién jugabas?

I have been playing football since I remember. I played on the street or at school with friends, in family reunions with cousins and friends, and also in our neighbourhood. What I highlight the most from this is that I followed my brother’s footsteps. Although he used to complain that I was always imitating him, he is now proud he built my passion. When I was 15, a schoolmate who is four years older and with whom I used to play, saw me play football and brought me to play in the first women’s team where she played as the main goalkeeper. She now lives in the US and no longer plays after she injured her knees. She must not even remember this ever happened but I will be forever grateful.

Jugaba desde que tengo uso de razón. Lo hacía en la calle o en el colegio con mis amigos, también en reuniones familiares con mis primos y sus amigos, y más grande en la urbanización con mis vecinos. Lo que más destaco es haber seguido los pasos de mi hermano y aunque a él le fastidiaba que imitara todo lo que hacía, hoy siente orgullo de haberme transmitido esta pasión. A los 15 años una compañera del cole cuatro años mayor que yo, con la cual jugaba kickingball, me vio jugar (fútbol) y me llevó a participar de mi primer equipo femenino en donde ella era la arquera titular. Hoy en día vive en Estados Unidos, ya no juega al fútbol por lesiones en sus rodillas, y seguramente ni debe recordar esto pero se lo agradezco.

Why is football important to you and your community?

Por qué es importante el fútbol para ti y para tu comunidad?

Football knows no borders, and has the capacity to unite people, either in front of the TV or in the field. And it is also a fun way to stay healthy.

Football, apart from my family, has been the most beautiful way to learn and practice fundamental values as we grow up. In life, as in football, people come and go but if you pay attention, each of them will leave an important impression.

El fútbol es capaz de traspasar fronteras y así mismo de unirnos bien sea frente a una televisión o dentro de una cancha, además es una forma divertida de mantenernos saludables.

El fútbol, además de mi familia, ha sido la forma mas bonita de aprender y poner en práctica valores fundamentales en el desarrollo de nuestras vidas. En la vida, así como en el fútbol, personas vienen y personas van pero seguro que si te mantienes despierto cada una de ellas dejará una huella importante al pasar.

How has Covid-19 affected football in your community?

Cómo ha afectado la Covid-19 al fútbol en tu comunidad?

Football is a party and for many is the time we wait for every weekend where we are the hosts. However, the pandemic affected everything and forced people to stay home; for us it meant we had no guests at our party. Everything is progressively coming back to normal – our followers who help keep us motivated are coming back. In women’s football, we often just make due with friends and family.

El fútbol es una fiesta y para muchos la cita que esperan cada fin de semana en dónde nosotras somos las anfitrionas. Sin embargo, la pandemia hizo que esto se viera afectado y que la gente tuviera que resguardarse en sus hogares, mientras que por nuestra parte, debimos asistir a la fiesta sin invitados. Hoy gracias a Dios hemos recuperado ese estímulo tan importante que es nuestra hinchada, en el fútbol femenino la mayoría del tiempo conformada por familiares y amigos.

What ambitions do you have for the future?

Qué ambiciones tienes para el futuro?

In the past, at my age, team members used to retire because of injuries, careers or work which made it difficult for them to continue. I am grateful and can say that even though I have aspirations for the future, I still have years of my career ahead. I would NEVER want to separate my life from football or animals, they fill me with happiness.

En el pasado, a mi edad, era cuando mis compañeras se retiraban porque bien fueran las lesiones, sus carreras, o sus trabajos no les permitían continuar. Hoy vivo agradecida y puedo decir que a pesar de que tengo aspiraciones para el futuro, me quedan años de carrera en donde puedo seguir construyendo mi base y sacar provecho de ello. NUNCA quisiera desligar mi vida del fútbol ni de los animales, me llenan de felicidad.
