Playing To Make Peace

 Karina Souza, Brazil

Karina Souza comes from Olinda, Brazil, and is the Founder of local NGO Pazear (which translates in Portuguese as “to make peace”). She is the coordinator of the Rio Doce Field in a Box project. The field was built in 2018 to replace the local pitch called “Campo do CSU”, which was accumulating garbage and was no longer in use.

Pazear works with love.fútbol to organise pitches and tournaments for the community to play football, aiming to empower children and adults in a culture of peace. love.fútbol is a non-profit organisation that works with communities around the world (including 17 in Brazil) to create, restore and redefine sporting spaces as community centers and lasting platforms for the development of youth and their communities.

Can you introduce yourself and tell us about your football life?

I'm Karina Souza, I am Brazilian, and I live in the city of Olinda, which is a World Heritage Site. But when we go to the outskirts of the city the reality is quite different. It was in one of these favelas that I grew up losing many childhood friends to the violent world of crime and drugs. I started dreaming of doing something for the new generations and together with friends we founded the NGO Pazear. 

Brazil breathes football and as it would be no different here, I decided to use football as a tool for education and social inclusion. I coordinate the first soccer school in the community that serves 120 children and teenagers. From this work we managed to make good partnerships, like with love.fútbol, that created a field in our community, which is used as a social development platform. Recently, I also created the women's football project As Jogadeiras de Olinda, which aims to promote the empowerment of girls through football, also creating a safe environment where they can strengthen themselves.

Eu sou a Karina Souza, brasileira e moro na  cidade de Olinda que é considerada Patrimônio Cultural da Humanidade. Mas, quando vamos para o subúrbio da cidade a realidade é bem diferente. E, foi em umas dessas favelas que crescí perdendo muitos amigos de infância para a violência do mundo do crime e drogas. Comecei a sonhar em fazer algo pelas novas gerações  e junto com amigos fundamos a ong Pazear. 

O Brasil respira futebol e como aqui não seria diferente, resolvi usar o futebol como ferramenta de educação e inclusão social. Coordeno a primeira escolinha de futebol  da comunidade que atende 120 crianças e adolescentes. A partir desse trabalho conseguimos fazer boas parcerias que renderam um campo society na nossa comunidade que é usado como uma plataforma de desenvolvimento social. E, recentemente idealizei o projeto de futebol feminino As Jogadeiras de Olinda que tem o objetivo de promover o empoderamento de meninas através do futebol criando também um ambiente seguro onde possam se fortalecer.

What did you try to show with the photos? Was there any broader meaning to the photos?

They are residents and children of the project. For example, I tried to show a task force for community cleaning. Inspired by the sense of belonging, the community gathered to take care of the pitch with great joy and unity.

Days later, with the quarantine in 2020 due to the Pandemic, I showed the impact that football has suffered from social isolation. Sad children in masks looking at the empty field without the joy of before when it was possible to have many people together.

São moradores e crianças do projeto. Eu tentei mostrar um dia de mutirão de limpeza, inspirados pelo senso de pertencimento, a comunidade se reúne pra cuidar do espaço com muita alegria e união.

E dias depois, com a quarentena em 2020 por causa da Pandemia, mostrei o impacto que o futebol sofreu com o isolamento social. Mostrei algumas crianças tristes, de máscaras olhando o campo vazio sem a alegria de antes quando era possivel ter muitas pessoas juntas. 

Are there any good stories related to the people or teams you photographed?

The photos show the unity of the community that was created from the collective experience of building the sports space. I rediscovered my community in these moments, as it revealed people who have the same feeling of dreaming of better days.

As fotos estão relacionadas a união da comunidade que foi ativada a partir da experiência coletiva da construção do espaço esportivo. Eu redescubro a minha comunidade nesses momentos, pois eles revelam pessoas que têm o mesmo sentimento de sonhar com dias melhores.

What is your favorite photo?

The one that pictures a child was alone with the ball, outside the empty field. That photo really portrayed the impact of the Pandemic on our community and the sadness of a child unable to find his or her friends to play with.

Criança sozinha com a bola, fora do campo vazio. Ela retratou bem o impacto da Pandemia na nossa comunidade e a tristeza de uma criança sem poder encontrar seus amigos para jogar. 

How has Covid-19 affected football in your community?

The main effects of Covid on our community and football are directly related to quarantine. Social isolation left serious consequences on the quality of life, which also affected the financial, educational, security, psychological, emotional and physical areas.

The first impact was the stoppage of activities in our space, as since 2018 the field has functioned as a platform for social development and a center of coexistence that contributes to the reduction of social vulnerability, to the maintenance of quality of life, and to the culture of peace.  

Thus, an average of 500 people stopped circulating in the space, directly impacting the income of local businesses and the space. People also stopped practicing physical activity (soccer) affecting their physical health, as there are reports of health problems related to sedentary lifestyle, as well as social isolation that triggered psychological and emotional illnesses related to anxiety and depression.

With the unoccupied space, the possibilities of its surroundings being used for criminal practices such as assaults, trafficking and drug use increased. Another impact was the cancellation of cleaning task forces that were carried out periodically, causing the surroundings to be affected by garbage.

Os principais efeitos que afetaram o futebol na nossa comunidade estão relacionados diretamente à quarentena. O isolamento social deixou graves sequelas na qualidade de vida, o que também brangeu as áreas financeira, educacional, segurança, psíquica, emocional e física. 

O primeiro impacto foi a paralisação das atividades do nosso espaço, pois o campo desde 2018 funciona como uma plataforma de desenvolvimento social e um centro de convivência que contribui para a diminuição da vulnerabilidade social, para a manutenção da qualidade de vida, e para a cultura de paz.

Dessa forma uma média de 500 pessoas deixaram de circular no espaço impactando diretamente na produção de renda dos comércios locais e do espaço. As pessoas também deixaram de praticar atividade fisica (futebol) afetando a sua saúde física, pois há relatos de problemas de saúde relacionados ao sedentarismo como também o isolamento social desencadeou doenças psíquicas e emocionais relacionadas à ansiedade e a depressão. 

Com o espaço desocupado aumentam as possibilidades do seu entorno ser usado para práticas criminosas como assaltos, tráfico e uso de drogas. Outro impacto foi o cancelamento de mutirões de limpeza que eram realizados periodicamente fazendo com que o entorno fosse afetado por lixos.

Why is football so important to Brazil and its people?

Sport is a universal language but here football becomes an obsession, as it is the most accessible sport because it reaches all classes. I grew up watching boys make their own balls out of cloth bags and they could have fun. Being among friends guarantees fun and joy. But if other sports were accessible, would football still be Brazil's passion? I question this, but football would not lose its importance, as it has already become a tradition, generating one of the greatest national trends that makes the wheel of economic development move. Given this, I think it's very important that each child has a safe place to play.

O esporte é uma linguagem universal mas aqui o  futebol se torna uma paixão, pois acredito que é o mais acessível, pois ele atinge todas as classes. Eu crescí vendo meninos fabricarem as suas próprias bolas com sacolas de panos e já podiam se divertir. Estar entre amigos é garantia de diversão e alegria. Mas será que se os outros esportes fossem acessíveis, ainda assim seria o futebol a paixão do Brasil?  Me questiono isso, porém o futebol não perderia a sua importância, pois já virou tradição gerando um dos maiores intertredimento nacional que gira uma roda de desenvolvimento econômico também.  Diante disso, ainda acho muito importante que cada criança pudesse ter um lugar seguro pra jogar. 

What are the opportunities for female soccer players in Brazil?

Although football here in Brazil is a national passion, it still progresses slowly with women's football, the gender disparity is huge. If for the professional players it's difficult, imagine how it is for the young girls? But each year the visibility increases, the last World Cup was a watershed moment, but good opportunities are still rare.

Embora o futebol aqui no Brasil seja uma paixão nacional, ainda caminha a passos lentos em relação ao futebol feminino, a disparidade de gênero é enorme. Se para as jogadoras profissionais é difícil, imagina para as meninas da base? Mas a cada ano a visibilidade aumenta, a última Copa do mundo foi um um divisor de águas mas as boas oportunidades ainda são raras. 

What does football mean to you and your community?

Most of my childhood friends who weren't involved in crime were busy playing ball. So football for me means a protective amulet. And that's how I see it with the current generation. As long as they are on the field with our team, learning through football, they will be safe. For my community, it's a language that everyone understands, it's a fun time, it's friendship, it's social and economic development, it's peace.

A maioria dos meus amigos de infância que não se envolveram com o crime, estavam ocupados jogando bola. Portanto o futebol pra mim significa um amuleto de proteção. E é assim que sigo o vendo com a atual geração.  Enquanto estão dentro do campo com a nossa equipe, aprendendo através  do futebol, estarão seguros. Para a minha comunidade é uma linguagem que todos se entendem, é a hora da diversão, é amizade, é desenvolvimento social e econômico, é paz. 

What is the future of Brazilian football (and especially women's football)?

Brazilian women's football is evolving and needs to grow. Men’s football has already reached a high economic level, but they need to reinvent themselves to create financial sustainability, ethics and, above all, social responsibility.

O futebol brasileiro feminino tá evoluindo e tem muito a crescer. Já o masculino Já deve ter chegado num alto patamar econômico mas que precisam se reinventar para consolidar a sustentabilidade financeira , ética e principalmente a responsabilidade social.

What are your ambitions for the future?

Develop an education methodology through football to replicate in other communities, reaching more children.
