A Family Game

Johanna Yánez, Ecuador

Johanna Yánez lives in Quito and is part of a UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, and FUDELA, the Foundation of the Americas, initiative. UNHCR and FUDELA work together to promote the integration of refugees and host communities through sport. Football plays a key role in helping refugee and local children and youth foster lasting friendships and live a healthy lifestyle.

Johanna Yánez vive en Quito y es parte de una iniciativa de ACNUR, la Agencia de la ONU para los Refugiados, y FUDELA, la Fundación de las Américas, una ONG local. Ambas organizaciones trabajan juntas para facilitar la integración de las personas refugiadas y sus comunidades de acogida a través del deporte. El fútbol juega un papel clave para ayudar a los niños, niñas y adolescentes refugiados y locales a crear lazos de amistad duraderos, mientras aprenden valores como la solidaridad y un estilo de vida saludable.

Can you introduce yourself and tell us about your football life?

My name is Johanna Yánez and I am 15 years old. I am Venezualan, but now live in Quito, Ecuador. I have been playing soccer since I was 6 years old and I had a career with several Venezuelan teams, one of them being Caracas F.C. We left Venezuela due to the situation in the country.

I would like to go to a university through a scholarship and study medicine to be a surgeon in the future.

Mi nombre es Johanna Yánez y tengo 15 años. Soy venezolana, pero ahora vivo en Quito, Ecuador. Juego al fútbol desde que tenía 6 años y he estado en varios equipos de Venezuela. Uno de ellos es el Caracas F. C. Nos tuvimos que ir de Venezuela debido a la situación del país.

Me gustaría ir a la universidad con una beca para estudiar medicina. Quiero ser cirujana.

What did you try to show with the photos?

I showed my dad and my brother on a large soccer field in Sangolquí, in the Chillos Valley. In one photo you can see my brother with the football and is wearing the uniform of the Venezuelan team.

En las fotos mostré a mi papá y a mi hermano en una cancha de fútbol grande en Sangolquí, en el Valle de los Chillos. En una foto se puede ver a mi hermano con la pelota de fútbol y con el uniforme de la Selección de Venezuela.

What role does football and Fudela play in your life at the moment?

I grew up with soccer and my whole family plays soccer. It is a way of relaxation and distraction and it is very important for my life. During the pandemic we all had to practice soccer at home and that affected many people.

The most important role football plays is with communication. Fudela teaches us the most beautiful things about sports.

Crecí con el fútbol y toda mi familia juega a este deporte. Es una forma de relajarnos y distraernos y es muy importante en mi vida. Durante la pandemia tuvimos que jugar dentro de casa y eso afectó a mucha gente.

El rol más importante que juega el fútbol es en la comunicación. Fudela nos enseña las cosas más bonitas que tienen que ver con el deporte.
